Your Safety Solution

Protect your patients from adverse drug events (ADEs) by combining smart pump technology with the safety of a medication library. PharmGuard® Medication Safety Software is a Dose Error Reduction System (DERS) which helps reduce pump programming errors and ADEs by encouraging the use of standard drug concentrations via custom drug libraries that are deployed to the Medfusion® pumps.

Safety at your patient’s bedside

The Medfusion® 4000 infusion pump is always in "medication safety" status from the moment you power up the pump, helping to promote your facility’s policies and procedures for medication administration and safety. This auto-default to the PharmGuard® drug library encourages patient safety through the use of established drug protocols set by your hospital’s pharmacists. With nothing to turn on at the bedside, nursing staff are able to quickly start an infusion, with the power of drug libraries supporting them.

Size matters when it comes to determining dosage

The smallest patients in the hospital are also the most vulnerable, with medication errors 8 times more likely in the NICU than adult settings.1 The system provides the ability to configure care areas and drug protocols to your hospital’s care strategies and workflow. Pharmacists can set hard and soft limits for each drug and profile, protecting against medication errors regardless of your patient’s size or where in the hospital they are receiving care.

Easy to Use,
Fast to Program

The Medfusion® pump is a reliable medication delivery system that helps confirm your critical decisions by thinking with you about infusion accuracy and safety . The syringe pump has an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to start the infusion process.

The pump workflow defaults directly into the PharmGuard® drug library with intuitive programming, resulting in fewer keypad entries. The established drug libraries allow nursing teams to quickly and confidently begin medication delivery.
Try some of the steps:
Keep your patients comfortable during surgery and recovery by entrusting Medfusion® 4000’s precise delivery to infuse anesthesia drugs. With our quick library set up, it only takes three steps to start an infusion , with the safety and confidence of hard and soft limits for each drug in the profile.
Designed with human factors for real users
The Medfusion® 4000 wireless syringe infusion pump was cleared by the FDA, meeting the agency’s draft guidance for “Applying Human Factors and Usability Engineering to Optimize Medical Device Design”.

Promoting Better Patient Outcomes

Smiths Medical understands that process improvement to advance patient safety and quality of care requires dynamic, interdisciplinary collaboration with your entire infusion management team. The PharmGuard® Infusion Management Software Suite can assist your efforts with customized actionable reporting .

Closing the CQI Loop

Continuous quality improvement is made easier with device specific reports that are available for your entire infusion management team. These reports give you the ability to analyze trends, compare against compliance goals, and measure infusion safety to make evidence-based practice decisions.

Report types include:

  • Compliance by profile, time of day, trends
  • Safety Events by drug program, event trigger
  • Drug Program Utilization infusion frequency by drug program
  • Device Events infusion detail, event history
  • Alarm Events most frequent, invalid parameter combinations
  • Clinical Engineering battery status, preventative maintenance, device detail

CQI reporting improves safety at CHEO

In 2010, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) introduced the Medfusion® 4000 wireless syringe infusion pump with PharmGuard® Infusion Management Software. Before the implementation, CHEO staff updated its drug library less frequently than they would have preferred, every 18-24 months, due to high labor costs to locate and modify infusion pump software.

With PharmGuard® Server Software access, CHEO now enjoys the benefit of updating drug libraries as often as needed, with minimal labor costs.

Simple and fast updates via PharmGuard® Server Software

The PharmGuard® Server Software offers your facility the benefit of no longer needing to touch a single pump to update drug libraries or firmware. This means that your pharmacy team can make drug library updates in the application which are seamlessly sent out to your entire pump fleet. Your biomedical team can track pump location and status to identify maintenance or connectivity issues.
